How does City Heights fit into your life story? It's interesting because I first came down to San Diego in the year 2000, and I was living in a small apartment on 63rd and El Cajon Boulevard, and I remember thinking when I first moved into that apartment, how different it was from the hometown that I grew up in where I had known the same people most of my life, and there wasn't a very big difference about from the areas in my town. As you can observe across town, all of the different areas were pretty similar. When I graduated from SDSU, I had moved out of the City Heights area and down to Pacific Beach for a little bit, but it wasn't long before I found myself back close to City Heights, living in Talmadge. One thing I really liked about this area was that I started to notice how diverse my neighbors were, how diverse the businesses and how the different types of businesses that were close to my home. These were small business owners who had a story, who came to this area to make a new start for themselves. I really appreciated that. Eventually I ended up getting a teaching job here at Crawford and kind of noticed the same thing, that just like my neighbors didn't fit into any one category, my students don't fit into any one category, and they all bring with them a life story that is so different from each other, yet the same in the sense that we all ended up here, together, which is something that I find pretty remarkable.
